Drill pipe inspection in Singapore

Drill pipe and tubular inspection has been our core work since 1997, with more than 20,000 drill pipes inspected. We inspect pipe bodies, end areas and hardbanding for rig operators and pipe yards across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

What we inspect

Used drill pipe wears, cracks and loses wall in predictable places. We inspect each zone with the method suited to it, and report the condition joint by joint.

Pipe body (EMI)
Electromagnetic inspection along the full length of the tube to find transverse and longitudinal flaws and wall loss.
Special end areas
Tool joints and upsets, where fatigue cracks usually start, inspected with end-area coils and magnetic particle methods.
End-area ultrasonic testing
Ultrasonic testing of drill pipe end areas to find and size flaws that surface methods cannot reach.
Hardbanding (hard-face)
Inspection of hard-faced tool joints for cracking, loss and condition.
Threads and machining
Inspection of threads and machined features after repair or recut.
Visual after cleaning
Visual inspection of the cleaned pipe body, with marking and a written report.

Reference standards made in-house

Inspection is only as good as the calibration behind it. We make our own reference standards by EDM, with notches and side-drilled holes to API and DS-1 requirements, so every instrument is checked against a known flaw.

Trained tubular inspectors

Metcon was founded to inspect oil and gas tubulars and to train the people who do it. Our inspectors work under an ASNT Level III, and we have trained and certified more than 3,800 personnel since 1997.

Frequently asked questions

Not covered here? Call +65 9060 0775 or send us the details.

What does drill pipe inspection cover?

The pipe body by EMI, the special end areas and tool joints, ultrasonic testing of the end areas, hardbanding, threads and machined features, and a visual check after cleaning.

Can you inspect at our pipe yard or on the rig?

Yes. Most tubular inspection is done where the pipe is: at the yard, on the rig or offshore. We can also inspect at our facility in Singapore.

What is EMI inspection?

Electromagnetic inspection magnetises the pipe and scans the full length of the body with sensors that pick up flux leakage from cracks, pits and wall loss, so the whole tube is covered, not just spots.

Do you supply reference standards?

Yes. We make EDM reference standards with notches and side-drilled holes to API and DS-1 requirements.
